Every Thursday, Hans Hansen leads Volunteer Day at Blackwood!
This is a FREE event that is essentially a hands-on workshop open to everyone. We call it Volunteer Day because the participants harvest the food to be prepared for sale at a market. Volunteers and participants are exposed to many different topics that go beyond permaculture. Volunteers must be prepared to get their hands dirty in order to gain the most value from our workshop.
Each week Hans picks a different agriculture, gardening or wild foods topic. Topics depend on season and what is happening at the teaching farm that particular week. Some weeks, volunteers work on the farm to plant or harvest. Some weeks, they work in the greenhouse to propagate seeds. Some weeks, they check on the honeybees and get a lesson in honeybee care, maintenance, honey harvest and canning. Other weeks, Hans takes volunteers on walks around Blackwood’s property to harvest wild foods and medicines. He often invites guest presenters to Volunteer Days.
Continuing our theme on regional food resiliency, this Thursday October 30th, Lisa Eck offered to share her knowledge on growing excellent wheatgrass; we must jump on the opportunity while it’s available. The deal was that we would split the presentation if Lisa would present on wheatgrass, Hans do microgreens. Very similar techniques, the resulting produce makes for one whambam!!! nutrient dense hit when juiced… though I also like my microgreens as salad (forget the lettuce!), on sandwiches (microgreens and dressing, you got it), as incredibly edible garnish, in sushi, as a taco topping… This Thursday, at Blackwood, Lisa and Hans will add one more presentation to this week’s presentation line-up. See you on Thursday and Sunday for Gulf Coast Bioneers!
