Blackwood Dogs

Sage and Bastion are our livestock guardian dogs. Their job is to protect the chickens from any predators, especially at night. They love to ride on the back of the gators.

The night watch of the Land

Sage and Bastion are our livestock guardian dogs, and the farm runs a little safer because of them. Their job is to protect the chickens and other animals from predators, and they take it seriously, especially after dark when coyotes and other visitors come prowling. A guardian dog does not herd the flock so much as live alongside it, watching, patrolling, and warning anything that comes too close.

For all their serious work, Sage and Bastion have plenty of personality. Their favorite perk of the job is riding on the back of the gators as we make our way around the property.

Fun facts

  • Livestock guardian dogs bond with the animals they protect rather than with the people who own them.
  • Most of their guarding happens at night, when predators are most active.
  • A good bark is often all it takes. The best guardians prevent trouble long before it starts.
