SUMMARY:Special Volunteer Day in Honor of Marlin & Aaron
DESCRIPTION:In the Fall of 2021\, just weeks after the Skyfarm first came into our lives at Blackwood\, we were contacted by Marlin\, our very first volunteer. \n\nAfter reading an announcement that we would be operating the rooftop farm at POST Houston\, Marlin wrote to us\, “I am retired\, live nearby and love soil!” \nSince that day\, he has tirelessly committed his time\, talents\, and warm\, generous spirit to helping us achieve all of our major milestones. Marlin also knows that nothing transformative happens without the power of community\, and that each connection we make amplifies that power. \nAt our first Skyfarm Volunteer Day\, Marlin and our very own staff member R. Aaron Flores became fast friends\, and they are sharing in this celebration in honor of Aaron’s February birthday as well. \nIn addition to this special Volunteer Day & Celebration\, Marlin & Aaron will raise funds throughout the month and invite friends\, donors\, volunteers\, and all of Houston to share their love of the Skyfarm by making a donation toward their $15\,000 goal. \nClick here to donate >>  |  Click here to volunteer >> \nWhether you volunteer\, donate\, or simply stop by for a Second Serving-rescued cupcake on 2/25 with Marlin and Aaron\, we are grateful for any support toward the Skyfarm and the community impact it allows us. \nAll funds from Marlin & Aaron’s campaign will go toward the following immediate needs at the Skyfarm: \n\nDesign\, production\, and installation of educational signage to be placed along the entire perimeter of the Skyfarm with QR codes directing visitors to information about the current crops and experiments running at the farm\, and\nDirect expenses for Blackwood to conduct a pilot program with the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department this Spring.\n\nThrough this program\, Blackwood will provide nature\, food\, and agriculture education at the Juvenile Detention Center just blocks away from the Skyfarm\, as well as the HCJPD’s other facilities in Katy and Seabrook.\nDuring this pilot\, residents at the Juvenile Detention Center will gain hands-on farm education by starting seeds indoors for the Skyfarm’s Spring and Summer seasons.\nWhile sentenced at JDC\, the residents who are between 10-17 years old do not have access to the outdoors. Through this program\, however\, they will have a lasting impact on Houston’s community farm and the largest rooftop farm in Texas\, with opportunities for them to stay involved after release.

SUMMARY:Tour the Skyfarm
DESCRIPTION:The Blackwood Skyfarm at POST Houston is available for educational tours to groups\, schools\, businesses\, and more each week by appointment\, made at least 48 hours in advance. Our availability for tours is Thursday 8 AM to 12 PM\, Friday 12 PM to 2 PM\, and Saturday 2 PM to 4 PM. Our standard introductory tour lasts for one hour but can be expanded to either a two-hour deep dive or a four-hour educational volunteer day.\n\n\n  \nAt our introductory tour\, we walk our current crops and demonstrate how the Skyfarm blends both ancestral\, regenerative food production practices and 21st-century technologies to produce organic food with fewer food miles and a lower carbon footprint. The tour will also include a seasonal food education component inspired by our current crops. Each visitor will leave with an understanding of the climate impact of our conventional food system\, how farming practices deployed at the Blackwood Landfarm in Hempstead and Skyfarm at POST Houston help to mitigate the effects of greenhouse gas emissions\, and the benefits of locally grown\, nutrient-dense foods and plant medicine.\n\n  \nBy envisioning and building the Skyfarm\, POST Houston shows that the sky is the limit for far-sighted leaders to learn how to transform a historically short-sighted city. Blackwood is thrilled to be a part of this collaboration and to be blazing new trails toward Houston’s green future. Please join us!\n\n  \nTours are open to the public\, and the suggested donation for those who are able is $10 per person. To schedule a tour\, please email info@blackwoodland.org.
