SUMMARY:Outstanding in the Field with Chef Dawn Burrel
DESCRIPTION:Night two at this inspiring 33-acre educational farm where host farmer Cath Conlon and her team tend to a variety of vegetables\, fruits\, laying hens and apiaries. The farm calls itself a “living laboratory\,” using restorative agriculture practices to find the essential balance between land preservation and food production. Their educational programming seeks to empower youth to learn about where their food comes from and their robust CSA provides fresh\, nutritious food to folks across Houston and Austin. Our farm tour will tell you even more. Guest chef Dawn Burrel will cook the evening’s meal in the field. Dawn is an Olympic-athlete-turned-chef. In 2000\, she competed in the Summer Olympics as a long jumper representing Team USA. In 2021\, she competed on Bravo’s Top Chef. After traveling the world with the USA’s Track & Field team\, she worked in a slew of celebrated Texas kitchens including Uchi and Kulture. Her newest venture Late August opens in Houston this summer — with a menu that aims to “bring the soul of Afro-Asian flavors to the table.”

SUMMARY:Outstanding in the Field
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nBlackwood is a non-profit\, 33-acre teaching farm with a variety of crops\, laying hens and bees. Their goal is to model how regenerative agriculture practices can positively impact the planet and also improve our food system in the process. Blackwood serves the community through summer camps and field trips to empower local youth and a thriving CSA program that serves both Houston and Austin. Our farm tour will tell you even more. You might leave inspired to start gardening or invest in an apiary. Sasha Grumman is an OITF veteran who’s cooked with us up and down California on the crew of several restaurant teams. Now she’s based in Houston and this is her first time calling the shots in the field kitchen. Sasha spent much of 2020 focused on focaccia and filming Top Chef 2021. She’s fierce\, and we love her! \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Back to Basics: Principles of Living on the Land
DESCRIPTION:The third and final week (March 27th) of our Spring Back to Basics Workshop series will focus on principles of living on the land. Our goal is to introduce you to basic skills that will help you stay comfortable and safe in the great outdoors\, and begin to establish a personal relationship with nature. Guided by “leave no trace” principles\, we will forage around our property to identify edibles as we gather firewood for the fire we will build together later on\, then discuss water purification methods\, how to pack and plan for primitive camping\, and other tips for making your next backcountry adventure easy and enjoyable. Open to all levels of experience\, but especially beneficial for those new to backcountry or primitive camping. \nWhether you attend one or all of these workshops\, our goal is that each participant leaves with a better understanding of what it means to survive and thrive as a human animal inherently connected to nature! \nThis workshop series is open to all age and experience levels and is part of our Back to the Basics for Adult Workshop Series. Learn more about the series here >>
