SUMMARY:2023 Nature Camp: Session 1
DESCRIPTION:Blackwood Nature Camp is a week-long overnight camp in Hempstead\, TX for ages 8-14. Our goal is simple: get kids outside and active! Campers enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking\, swimming (swim test required)\, archery\, paddle boarding\, and forest games. They take classes like natural dyeing\, cane-pole fishing\, and cooking. They learn about wildlife in workshops hosted by local experts. They stargaze\, tell stories\, and roast s’mores at night by the campfire. \nCampers learn about nature\, animals\, sportsmanship\, and camaraderie. With the support of highly trained counselors\, they’ll explore the wilderness and discover what secrets and wisdom the forest has to tell. This life-changing week of adventure offers children the opportunity to build a relationship with nature and safely explore the great outdoors. At Blackwood\, we take pride in being inclusive to all children.

SUMMARY:Foraging Workshop with Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen
DESCRIPTION:Blackwood is proud to offer the rare opportunity to take a foraging class with Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen\, founder of the wildly popular foragingtexas.com blog and the Medicine Man Plant Co. plant medicine line. Together we will see what hidden forageable bounties exist around our 33-acre property\, which encompasses three different biomes\, each possessing its trove of native edible and medicinal flora. With Dr. Vorderbruggen as our guide in a small group setting\, we’ll learn how to identify\, harvest\, and use the native Texas plants surrounding us. \nDetails: \n\nThis tour will involve lots of walking around our 33-acre property. Participants must wear closed-toed shoes and are encouraged to use sun protection and drink plenty of water.\nLunch will be available for purchase from our Farm Stand between 12 PM and 1 PM.\n\nDr. Vorderbruggen started one of the top foraging sites on the internet in 2008\, but he has been a forager all his life. Both his parents’ families used foraged foods to survive during the Great Depression\, and they passed their knowledge on to him. Knowing how to harvest nature’s free food fed him through the poverty years of his childhood and while getting a master’s degree in medicinal chemistry and a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry. For the last 18 years\, he has worked as a research chemist in the oil industry\, using his knowledge of natural products to develop environmentally friendly replacements for traditional oil field chemicals. However\, his evenings and weekends are spent guiding people back to nature’s bounty\, teaching them which plants are edible and/or medicinal and proselytizing how foraging heals the body\, mind\, and soul … and prepares them for the zombie apocalypse!

DESCRIPTION:Blackwood’s Winter Dinner on December 3rd is our first of the year. Chef Cade will create a seasonal five-course menu reflecting what inspires us every day: a love of blending tradition and experimentation\, seasonal eating in a region with quirky seasons\, and honoring the fruits of regenerative agriculture practice for us as individuals and as a collective. SUMMARY:Outstanding in the Field with Chef Dawn Burrel
DESCRIPTION:  \nNight two at this inspiring 33-acre educational farm where host farmer Cath Conlon and her team tend to a variety of vegetables\, fruits\, laying hens and apiaries. The farm calls itself a “living laboratory\,” using restorative agriculture practices to find the essential balance between land preservation and food production. Their educational programming seeks to empower youth to learn about where their food comes from and their robust CSA provides fresh\, nutritious food to folks across Houston and Austin. Our farm tour will tell you even more. Guest chef Dawn Burrel will cook the evening’s meal in the field. Dawn is an Olympic-athlete-turned-chef. In 2000\, she competed in the Summer Olympics as a long jumper representing Team USA. In 2021\, she competed on Bravo’s Top Chef. After traveling the world with the USA’s Track & Field team\, she worked in a slew of celebrated Texas kitchens including Uchi and Kulture. Her newest venture Late August opens in Houston this summer — with a menu that aims to “bring the soul of Afro-Asian flavors to the table.” \n

SUMMARY:Outstanding in the Field with Chef Justin Yu
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nBlackwood is a non-profit\, 33-acre teaching farm with a variety of crops\, laying hens and bees. Their goal is to model how regenerative agriculture practices can positively impact the planet and improve our food system in the process. Blackwood serves the community through summer camps and field trips to empower local youth\, plus a thriving CSA program that serves both Houston and Austin. We will honor that important work with a meal from guest chef Justin Yu and his superstar team at Houston’s Hotel Lucine\, Squable\, Theodore Rex and Better Luck Tomorrow. His three restaurants are some of Houston’s very best — known for elevated European-American menus with creative twists\, locally sourced ingredients and award-winning cocktails. Over the years\, they’ve won a long list of accolades from Bon Appetit\, Food & Wine and James Beard. Big talent in the field kitchen at this supremely inspiring place. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Foraging Workshop with Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen (Afternoon Session)
DESCRIPTION:Blackwood is proud to offer the rare opportunity to take a foraging class with Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen\, founder of the wildly popular foragingtexas.com blog and the Medicine Man Plant Co. plant medicine line. Together we will see what hidden forageable bounties exist around our 33-acre property\, which encompasses three different biomes each possessing its own trove of native edible and medicinal flora. With Dr. Vorderbruggen as our guide in a small group setting\, we’ll learn how to identify\, harvest\, and use the native Texas plants which surround us. \nDetails: \n\nPlease note that the morning and afternoon sessions will cover different parts of the farm and hence different vegetation. Participants are welcome to do one or both sessions\, however\, the fee is the same per session.\nLunch will be available from our Farm Stand between 12 PM and 1 PM.\n\nThis tour will involve lots of walking around our 33-acre property. Participants must wear closed-toed shoes and are encouraged to use sun protection and drink plenty of water. \nDr. However\, his evenings and weekends are spent guiding people back to nature’s bounty\, not only teaching them which plants are edible and/or medicinal\, but also proselytizing how foraging heals the body\, mind\, and soul … and prepares them for the zombie apocalypse!

DESCRIPTION:Blackwood Nature Camp is a week-long overnight camp for ages 8-14 located in Hempstead\, TX. Our goal is simple: get kids outside and active! Campers enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking\, swimming (swim test required)\, paddle-boarding\, and forest games. They take classes like natural dyeing\, cane-pole fishing\, and cooking. They learn about wildlife in workshops hosted by local experts. New this year we have paddle boarding and archery added to the roster of activities. At night\, they stargaze\, tell stories\, and roast s’mores by the campfire.\nCampers learn about nature\, animals\, sportsmanship\, and camaraderie.

Mark Vorderbruggen (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 26 from 8 AM to 12 PM\n\n$75 per person\nRSVP by emailing info@blackwoodland.org\nLunch will be available from our Farm Stand.\n\nBlackwood is proud to offer the rare opportunity to take a foraging class with Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen\, founder of the wildly popular foragingtexas.com blog and the Medicine Man Plant Co. plant medicine line. We will host Dr. Vorderbruggen on Thursday\, May 26 from 8 AM to 12 PM\, and we have a few spots left! Together we will see what hidden forageable bounties exist around our 33-acre property\, which encompasses three different biomes each possessing their own trove of native edible and medicinal flora. With Dr. Vorderbruggen as our guide in a small group setting\, we’ll learn how to identify\, harvest\, and use the native Texas plants which surround us. \nThis tour will involve lots of walking around our 33-acre property. Participants must wear closed-toed shoes and are encouraged to use sun protection and drink plenty of water. \nDr. Vorderbruggen started one of the top foraging sites on the internet in 2008\, but he has been a forager all his life. Both his parents’ families used foraged foods to survive during the Great Depression\, and they passed their knowledge on to him. Knowing how to harvest nature’s free food fed him through the poverty years of his childhood and while getting a master’s degree in medicinal chemistry and a PhD in physical organic chemistry. For the last 18 years\, he has worked as a research chemist in the oil industry\, using his knowledge of natural products to develop environmentally friendly replacements for traditional oil field chemicals. However\, his evenings and weekends are spent guiding people back to nature’s bounty\, not only teaching them which plants are edible and/or medicinal\, but also proselytizing how foraging heals the body\, mind\, and soul … and prepares them for the zombie apocalypse!
