DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 26 from 8 AM to 12 PM\n\n$75 per person\nRSVP by emailing info@blackwoodland.org\nLunch will be available from our Farm Stand.\n\nBlackwood is proud to offer the rare opportunity to take a foraging class with Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen\, founder of the wildly popular foragingtexas.com blog and the Medicine Man Plant Co. plant medicine line. We will host Dr. Vorderbruggen on Thursday\, May 26 from 8 AM to 12 PM\, and we have a few spots left! Together we will see what hidden forageable bounties exist around our 33-acre property\, which encompasses three different biomes each possessing their own trove of native edible and medicinal flora. With Dr. Vorderbruggen as our guide in a small group setting\, we’ll learn how to identify\, harvest\, and use the native Texas plants which surround us. \nThis tour will involve lots of walking around our 33-acre property. Participants must wear closed-toed shoes and are encouraged to use sun protection and drink plenty of water. \nDr. Vorderbruggen started one of the top foraging sites on the internet in 2008\, but he has been a forager all his life. Both his parents’ families used foraged foods to survive during the Great Depression\, and they passed their knowledge on to him. Knowing how to harvest nature’s free food fed him through the poverty years of his childhood and while getting a master’s degree in medicinal chemistry and a PhD in physical organic chemistry. For the last 18 years\, he has worked as a research chemist in the oil industry\, using his knowledge of natural products to develop environmentally friendly replacements for traditional oil field chemicals. However\, his evenings and weekends are spent guiding people back to nature’s bounty\, not only teaching them which plants are edible and/or medicinal\, but also proselytizing how foraging heals the body\, mind\, and soul … and prepares them for the zombie apocalypse!

Volunteers can join 5:30 AM to 8 AM to be live on the air with us.\nThe foods grown in this unique urban setting with Houston’s iconic Downtown skyline as its backdrop will be on offer to POST Market Hall eateries and at an on-site Farmer’s Market by late Summer. \nThe harvests from this inaugural planting at an iconic central Houston location will also be a powerful (and delicious) educational tool and illustration of the concept of food miles and how organic food can be produced with a greatly reduced carbon footprint through “regenerative practices” in the urban setting. \nFill out this form to reserve your spot.

DESCRIPTION:Blackwood Educational Land Institute and POST Houston are proud to announce the first planting at the Skyfarm\, the one-acre rooftop farm atop the historic building formerly known as the Barbara Jordan Post Office in downtown Houston. \nVolunteers are invited to help us prepare for the first planting on Thursday afternoon from 3-5 pm. We’ll be preparing the rooftop beds for new plants that will be transplanted over the weekend. The meal will also be paired with a special selection of wines chosen by Erick Navas of Central City Co-Op. \nTickets available at Central City Co-Op. We’ll sip and sow into the early evening with eco-friendly wines specially selected by our friends at Central City Co-Op and a seasonal dessert made by Blackwood’s very own Chef Cade. \nEach guest will partake in helping us grow\, literally\, by assisting in sowing our first crops at the Skyfarm and will receive two glasses of wine\, plus a Strawberry Rhubarb Flower Pot for dessert. VIP tickets holders will leave with extra take-home goodies fresh from our farm in Hempstead. Other educational activities will include blending your very own signature herb tea. \nThe Houston skyline will be the perfect backdrop for your V-Day selfies to commemorate the moment\, and Blackwood will you forever for helping us to raise funds for a community urban rooftop farm unlike any other in the world. We can’t wait to see you Monday\, February 14th from 5-8pm at 401 Franklin Street on the Skylawn!
