SUMMARY:Tour the Skyfarm
DESCRIPTION:The Blackwood Skyfarm at POST Houston is available for educational tours to groups\, schools\, businesses\, and more each week by appointment\, made at least 48 hours in advance. Our availability for tours is Thursday 8 AM to 12 PM\, Friday 12 PM to 2 PM\, and Saturday 2 PM to 4 PM. Our standard introductory tour lasts for one hour but can be expanded to either a two-hour deep dive or a four-hour educational volunteer day.\n\n\nAt our introductory tour\, we walk our current crops and demonstrate how the Skyfarm blends both ancestral\, regenerative food production practices and 21st-century technologies to produce organic food with fewer food miles and a lower carbon footprint. The tour will also include a seasonal food education component inspired by our current crops. Each visitor will leave with an understanding of the climate impact of our conventional food system\, how farming practices deployed at the Blackwood Landfarm in Hempstead and Skyfarm at POST Houston help to mitigate the effects of greenhouse gas emissions\, and the benefits of locally grown\, nutrient-dense foods and plant medicine.\n\nBy envisioning and building the Skyfarm\, POST Houston shows that the sky is the limit for far-sighted leaders to learn how to transform a historically short-sighted city. Blackwood is thrilled to be a part of this collaboration and to be blazing new trails toward Houston’s green future. Please join us!\n\nTours are open to the public\, and the suggested donation for those who are able is $10 per person. To schedule a tour\, please email info@blackwoodland.org.

Our standard introductory tour lasts for one hour but can be expanded to either a two-hour deep dive or a four-hour educational volunteer day.\n\n\n  \nAt our introductory tour\, we walk our current crops and demonstrate how the Skyfarm blends both ancestral\, regenerative food production practices and 21st-century technologies to produce organic food with fewer food miles and a lower carbon footprint. The tour will also include a seasonal food education component inspired by our current crops. Each visitor will leave with an understanding of the climate impact of our conventional food system\, how farming practices deployed at the Blackwood Landfarm in Hempstead and Skyfarm at POST Houston help to mitigate the effects of greenhouse gas emissions\, and the benefits of locally grown\, nutrient-dense foods and plant medicine.\n\n  \nBy envisioning and building the Skyfarm\, POST Houston shows that the sky is the limit for far-sighted leaders to learn how to transform a historically short-sighted city. Blackwood is thrilled to be a part of this collaboration and to be blazing new trails toward Houston’s green future. Please join us!\n\n  \nTours are open to the public\, and the suggested donation for those who are able is $10 per person. To schedule a tour\, please email info@blackwoodland.org.

SUMMARY:Foraging Workshop with Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen (Afternoon Session)
DESCRIPTION:Blackwood is proud to offer the rare opportunity to take a foraging class with Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen\, founder of the wildly popular foragingtexas.com blog and the Medicine Man Plant Co. plant medicine line. Together we will see what hidden forageable bounties exist around our 33-acre property\, which encompasses three different biomes each possessing its own trove of native edible and medicinal flora. With Dr. Vorderbruggen as our guide in a small group setting\, we’ll learn how to identify\, harvest\, and use the native Texas plants which surround us. \nDetails: \n\nPlease note that the morning and afternoon sessions will cover different parts of the farm and hence different vegetation. Participants are welcome to do one or both sessions\, however\, the fee is the same per session.\nLunch will be available from our Farm Stand between 12 PM and 1 PM.\n\nThis tour will involve lots of walking around our 33-acre property. Participants must wear closed-toed shoes and are encouraged to use sun protection and drink plenty of water. \nDr. Vorderbruggen started one of the top foraging sites on the internet in 2008\, but he has been a forager all his life. Both his parents’ families used foraged foods to survive during the Great Depression\, and they passed their knowledge on to him. Knowing how to harvest nature’s free food fed him through the poverty years of his childhood and while getting a master’s degree in medicinal chemistry and a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry. For the last 18 years\, he has worked as a research chemist in the oil industry\, using his knowledge of natural products to develop environmentally friendly replacements for traditional oil field chemicals. However\, his evenings and weekends are spent guiding people back to nature’s bounty\, not only teaching them which plants are edible and/or medicinal\, but also proselytizing how foraging heals the body\, mind\, and soul … and prepares them for the zombie apocalypse!
