SUMMARY:Journey Through Blackwood
DESCRIPTION:Buy tickets here!\nTickets are available through Eventbrite. Tickets will not be available for sale at the door.  \nBlackwood Land is partnering with artist Heath Brodie and Nicole Longnecker Gallery to host Journey Through Blackwood. Heath is creating ephemeral sculpture park throughout the three ecosystems at Blackwood: coastal prairie\, post oak savannah and the pine barrens. \nHeath uses site specific natural materials to create his works of art. The pieces are meant to exist only for as long as they last in nature and he believes in using the resources around you. Along the trails\, you’ll experience Heath’s theme depicting the intersection between nature\, education and art. \nJoin us for music\, cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres at Blackwood on the afternoon of May 3. \nFeaturing performances by Craig Kinsey and David McJunkin. \nBuy tickets here!\nTickets are available through Eventbrite. Tickets will not be available for sale at the door. \n#journeythroughblackwood \n@journeythrough \nCheck out more of Heath’s work here.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Day is Every Thursday! + Microgreens Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Register HERE.\nEvery Thursday\, Hans Hansen leads Volunteer Day at Blackwood! \nThis is a FREE event that is essentially a hands-on workshop open to everyone. We call it Volunteer Day because the participants harvest the food to be prepared for sale at a market. Volunteers and participants are exposed to many different topics that go beyond permaculture. Volunteers must be prepared to get their hands dirty in order to gain the most value from our workshop. \nEach week Hans picks a different agriculture\, gardening or wild foods topic. Topics depend on season and what is happening at the teaching farm that particular week. Some weeks\, volunteers work on the farm to plant or harvest. Some weeks\, they work in the greenhouse to propagate seeds. Some weeks\, they check on the honeybees and get a lesson in honeybee care\, maintenance\, honey harvest and canning. Other weeks\, Hans takes volunteers on walks around Blackwood’s property to harvest wild foods and medicines. He often invites guest presenters to Volunteer Days. \nContinuing our theme on regional food resiliency\, this Thursday October 30th\, Lisa Eck offered to share her knowledge on growing excellent wheatgrass; we must jump on the opportunity while it’s available. The deal was that we would split the presentation if Lisa would present on wheatgrass\, Hans do microgreens. Very similar techniques\, the resulting produce makes for one whambam!!! nutrient dense hit when juiced… though I also like my microgreens as salad (forget the lettuce!)\, on sandwiches (microgreens and dressing\, you got it)\, as incredibly edible garnish\, in sushi\, as a taco topping… This Thursday\, at Blackwood\, Lisa and Hans will add one more presentation to this week’s presentation line-up. See you on Thursday and Sunday for Gulf Coast Bioneers! \nRegister HERE.\nExamples of Volunteer Day Topics: \n\nHoney Bee Care and Honey Harvest with Janice Van Dyke Walden\nPropagation & Harvesting Workshop\nPam Kimsey and Seed Saving\nComposting 101\nWild Foods Foraging\nMicrogreens\n\nPlease email Hans at hans@blackwoodland.org if you would like to be added to the Blackwood volunteer email announcement. \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Hans' Culture of Soil Fertility Workshop
DESCRIPTION:#blackwoodgardentour\nSustainable farming and nutrient-dense food begin with care and culture of soil fertility. Vegetable and fruit quality and food nutrients need a full menu of soil minerals and optimum biological balances. Smart food growing restores soil fertility by establishing soil carbon in living soil with a complete array of minerals and beneficial microbiology.\nIn this workshop Hans will design a soil build program from soil tests of typical soil types of the Houston metro area. What he will do that is unique\, is create from scratch\, a custom blended organic fertilizer\, with the fully array of minerals to match each soil type. \nThe itinerary:\n• Ecological soil science in a nutshell: soil food web\, importance of soil carbon\, growing soil that yields nutrient dense food\n• Soils of the Houston Metro area\n• Soil tests: the different types\n• Overview of nutrients / minerals and their sources\n• Selecting the raw ingredients for your custom organic fertilizer blend\n• Doing the calculations\n• Exercises and individual consultations \nHans suggests that the best way to get the most of this workshop is to bring soil test results of your garden or property. He will assist you in creating a custom soil improvement program. Attendees may contact Hans for guidance on taking a proper soil test and where to send it. \nGet there early! Sometimes parking at Cafe Brasil can be tough!
